Bidet is a fancy word for something that does a dirty job. And brilliantly, we might add. A bidet is basically a toilet with a jet of water spraying out of it that is intended to get you clean without toilet paper. There are standalone bidets with vertical or horizontal sprays, bidet/toilet combos, and bidet seats you can install on your existing toilet. All accomplish the same purpose: personal cleansing. Bidets are commonplace in Europe and other parts of the world, but for some reason have not caught on here in the United States. We would like to see a bidet in every bathroom in America, and here’s why:
1. Bidets are easy to use
Turn on the water, let it do it’s job, and you’re done. No muss, no fuss. Seriously, this is one of the best inventions on the planet. It takes virtually no brain cells to use a bidet.
2. Bidets are hygienic
Using a bidet is considerably more hygienic than using toilet paper, which may not get the area totally clean or may actually leave behind bits of paper (eww). Bidets are thought to lower the risk of urinary tract infections as well as reduce the spread of germs.
3. Bidets are good for the environment
Did you know that Americans use almost 8 million tons of toilet paper every year? If every US household replaced even one roll of TP with one made from 100% recycled fibers, 423,900 trees would be saved. To continue that thought, a bidet makes far more sense and pays for itself in no time with the money saved on toilet paper, and helps save valuable environmental resources while reducing pollution (source: http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2014/10/18/bidet-use.aspx).
4. Bidets are great for the elderly
Bidets are almost a necessity among the older populations, those who might have arthritis or have difficulty moving or are unsteady on their feet. With a bidet the user can get clean easily without having to twist or turn.
5. Bidets can add a sense of luxury to your bathroom
If none of the above reasons are good enough, maybe we can appeal to your inner snob. Having a bidet in your bathroom is catching on with our more high end customers. It’s one of those “luxury” fixtures that not everyone has, even though we think they should be used every day by everyone. Consider a bidet a “toilet upgrade”.
Kohler is the largest manufacturer of bidets in the US. Check out the Numi, a Comfort Height® skirted one-piece elongated toilet with integrated bidet technology:
